At MJM Industries, to ensure that our customers receive reliable cable assemblies, all of our products must undergo Hipot testing. In this post, we’ll answer the following questions: what is Hipot testing, why is it important, and what is our process for performing this type of electrical safety test. Keep reading to learn the answers to these questions and more.
What Is Hipot Testing and Why Is It Important?
Hipot testing, or Dielectric Withstand Testing (DWT), is a safety test designed to verify the integrity of electrical insulation. These electrical safety tests are an integral part of electrical and electronic equipment manufacturing. More specifically, the Hipot test is the most common type of electrical safety test and is accomplished by stressing the insulation of the unit far beyond what it would encounter during normal use.
A Hipot test is a high-voltage withstand test that is completed by applying high voltages from a conductor to the chassis of the device undergoing testing. Additionally, dielectric strength testing can identify the following:
- Wiring defects such as pinched wires
- Stray wire strands
- Poor electrical clearance
At MJM Industries, high-voltage withstand tests are done to ensure that short circuits will not occur in any of the custom cable assemblies we produce. In order to pass the test, our products must have a dielectric withstanding voltage of at least 300V RMS @60 HZ/ 250V AC/ 1 min.
How Do We Perform Electrical Safety Tests for Our Cable Assemblies?
At MJM Industries, we perform all our dielectric testing utilizing Cirris test machines. More specifically, we currently use their latest and greatest test machine called the Easy-Touch Pro.
The Easy-Touch Pro from Cirris is a high-voltage tester with a built-in Windows operating system. It was designed to easily integrate within the manufacturing process and tests for opens, shorts, and miswires. This self-contained, high-voltage cable tester also measures resistance and verifies solder and crimp terminations.
Why Choose MJM Industries for Dielectric Testing?
At MJM Industries, we conveniently have the capability to do both AC and DC Hipot testing. We also have the ability to vary the time the high voltage is applied to each cable and the frequency of the AC waveform.
Additionally, with a configurable test unit such as the Easy-Touch Pro, we can meet specific customer dielectric strength testing requirements. Our test equipment records the data and can also print out copies of each test report.
Furthermore, our Hipot tested products are trusted by customers in a variety of industries. Some of these industries include:
- Automotive
- Aerospace
- Mass transit
- Consumer products
- Industrial automation
- Flat-panel display
- Test and measurement
- Defense and military
- Machine control
- Water treatment
- Appliance
- Medical
- Retail panel display
